The Ethics of Personalised Healthcare
In this resource students consider the ethical values of personalised healthcare. The Council reported that there are five widely acknowledged ethical values are identified that should be taken into consideration when weighing up the potential harms and benefits of developments in personalised healthcare:
- Private information should be safeguarded (privacy)
- People should be free to pursue their own interests in their own way (autonomy)
- The state should act to benefit people as much as possible (maximising welfare)
- Public resources should be used fairly and efficiently (fairness)
- Public policy should encourage sharing risks and working together to protect the vulnerable (solidarity)
The resource explains each one of these points and can be used as part of a discussion of the ethics of each individual case study.
