Introducing Chemistry: The Salters' Approach

The Salters’ Chemistry Course began with an introductory first year designed for students aged 13-14 (Year Nine). The publications, from the University of York Science Education Group, included a textbook and five unit guides.

Structure of the unit guides
Each unit guide contained:
* An overview: this gave a brief summary of the work covered.
* An overall plan (green): this indicated the work to be done as a lesson by lesson flow-diagram.
* A pre-planner: this indicated less readily available materials which might need to be assembled in advance.
* A resource directory: to identify films, videos, book references, and so on.
* Lesson plans (blue); for each lesson, indicating suggested activities and key teaching points.
* Teachers' notes (pink): guidance on the lesson strategy, questions to prompt discussion, lists of apparatus and materials required.
* Student materials: activity guides and information sheets in a form suitable for reproduction.
* Assessment items: some sample questions based on the material contained in the unit.
