Summary

This two-day residential aims to raise the profile of computing and engage learners by using a context based approach including linking to careers and enrichment opportunities.

During this residential, you’ll complete 4 NCCE courses:

You’ll explore a multitude of ways in which the computing curriculum may be brought to life using cross-curricular and career-related contexts. Whilst also finding out how to use the crumble and micro:bit for creative projects across the curriculum and beyond.

Your local computing hub can provide a loanable crumble and micro:bit kits enabling you to implement activities using this device in your classroom. You may also be interested in the Next Gen campaign.

By the end of this residential you’ll have the foundations of a variety of strategies that can be taken into the classroom, to support raising the attainment of students.

Completing this CPD will contribute towards recognised certification through the Teach primary computing certificate. You'll be supported along the way by your peers and experienced teaching professionals.

Residential information:

This is a residential course at the National STEM Learning Centre, York. Meals and overnight accommodation are included for participants for the duration of the course.

If wish to extend your stay in York, bed and breakfast will be available at the centre’s on-site accommodation at a discounted rate of £45+VAT per night. Computing leaders and teachers, who would like to raise the profile of computing in their schools and support learning across the wider curriculum.

What topics are covered?

  • Teaching primary computing through contexts during this course you’ll learn how you can teach computing using contexts from other curriculum subjects. Showing children how computing links to the world around them, supporting learning by making it more relevant and ensuring that all aspects of computing are taught effectively.
  • Careers and enrichment in primary computing with STEM Ambassadors– In this course, you will explore evidence around children’s career aspirations. Considering approaches to ensure all children are aware of future opportunities linked to computing. You will find out how to engage with a STEM Ambassador, to support effective career-learning at primary. You will also explore enrichment opportunities, identifying how best to use them to engage a diverse range of learners.
  • Introduction to the micro:bit in key stage 2 - During this CPD, you’ll learn how to get started with the micro:bit, exploring the in-built buttons, LEDs, and sensors for detecting movement, sound, light and heat. You’ll find out how to setup the device, how to attach add-ons to make use of the inputs and outputs, and how to teach using micro:bit, making use of freely available resources.
  • Physical computing kits - Crumble - During this CPD you’ll explore how Crumble can be used in the classroom, with blocks of code ‘snapping’ together in an easy-to-use, Scratch-like environment suitable for key stage 2. You’ll find out how to setup the device, how to make use of input and output terminals and explore how to use the device with children.

How long is this course?

You’ll complete 4 courses from the NCCE programme, totalling approximately 10 hours, split across two days.

By the end of this CPD package you will be able to:

  • teach knowledge and skills in computing through a cross-curricular approach
  • structure teaching using contextualised learning ensuring computing objectives are met
  • identify how to ensure progression in Computing when using cross-curricular contexts
  • develop the teaching of Computing in your school using contexts relevant to your learners and setting
  • tailor lessons to account for topics within year groups
  • gain hands-on experience and confidence using physical computing devices
  • explore pedagogy and lesson activities that make effective use of physical computing in the classroom
  • plan to implement physical computing in the classroom making use of loaned equipment from your local computing hub
