What topics are covered?

In this course, you'll discuss with other teachers and draw upon a range of resources to develop your approach to teaching primary science with the context of space exploration. You will look at how to:

  • engage children in working scientifically
  • learn about current and future space missions and how they can be linked to the curriculum
  • investigate forces and mechanisms in robotics
  • explore practical activities based upon the search for exoplanets
  • explore careers in space research and industry
  • find out about how we can explore space using telescopes.

This course takes around three hours per week to complete and you do not need to be online at any specific time.

Space Education Quality Mark

Taking part in this CPD will provide evidence for the Space Education Quality Mark (SEQM). It will also give you resources and subject knowledge that will enable you to plan lessons and enrichment activities to provide further evidence towards the quality mark. In the first week you will be presented with an activity grid to help you to identify areas which support the curriculum and give opportunities for working scientifically. This grid can also be used as part of the evidence for your submission.

This course started on 28 September 2020, but is still available to join now. You can participate on your own or with colleagues, drawing upon contributions made by other participants and our course mentors.

Outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • investigate opportunities to link space exploration and space missions wtih your lessons to excite and inspire your pupils.
  • develop lesson plans that involve working scientifically, using space as a context.
