Summary

There is an increased mathematical demand in in both the GCSE and A level chemistry specifications. This course is ideal for teachers of chemistry who wish to improve their understanding of the mathematics required to be successful in chemistry at A level.

The course explores teaching strategies for a wide range of mathematical topics including: proportional reasoning, graphs, area and volume, logarithms and exponentials.

Learn the mathematics behind the chemistry in order to teach for understanding. 

Who is it for?

Teachers of chemistry who are currently teaching A level or aspire to teach A level chemistry in the future. 

What topics are covered?

This two-day course covers:
  • Proportional reasoning: dealing with proportionality in a chemistry context
  • Graphs: drawing, reading information, finding gradients and equations, interpreting in a chemistry context
  • Surface area and volume calculations
  • Logarithms and exponential: what are they and how do we teach them?
  • Understanding the Arrhenius equation

How will you learn?

This course will be delivered face to face with participant tasks to be completed between sessions.

How long is this course?

This is a two-day intensive residential course.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to: 
  • Improve your knowledge of the mathematical topics required for A level chemistry
  • Have a deeper understanding of the reasons why students have difficulty applying their mathematical skills in a chemistry context
  • Identify pedagogies to help address these issues
  • Explore mathematics resources suitable for teaching A level chemistry
