Summary

This primary science conference will focus on outstanding practice in subject leadership and effective classroom practice to engage pupils in science. Participants will experience outstanding learning opportunities linked to topical developments in primary science. There will also be time to share good practice with other primary practitioners.

Outcomes

Participants will be able to :

  • Select activities to support the development of ‘hands on’ skills
  • Discuss ways to develop the leadership of science in your school
  • Identify opportunities for assessment in science, with suggested approaches.

10:30 Workshops

1a – Assessment (TAPS)
Assessment is a key aspect of determining the progress of your students. This workshop will look at strategies to help develop assessment across the primary science curriculum 

1b – Storybook Science
There are many different ways to present information - making a change from just “write down what you found out”. This session will look at ways that technology can be used to engage students and to integrate computing and literacy skills into science lessons.

2a – STEM Clubs
STEM clubs are a great way to engage students in the real world. This workshop will give participants strategies on how to make a success of these and how to engage with CREST awards

2b – Explorify
Making science “fun” is a great way to engage your students. Explorify is a range of interactive resources produced by the Wellcome Trust which help develop students to work scientifically. We will look at some of the resources available to engage your students in the classroom.

3a – Developing science leaders
Good science leadership is key to ensuring that the quality of teaching of the subject is able to enthuse and inspire students. This session will look at some quick wins to be effective in developing your leadership skills.

3b – Teaching the tricky areas
This session will focus on the effective teaching of “tough to teach” topic areas in the science curriculum with a focus on practical work.

15:15 STEM Ambassadors
The final session will explain how schools can use STEM Ambassadors to inspire and motivate students in STEM curriculum areas.
