Technicians supporting BTEC level 3 in applied science NY635 / A17

The BTEC Level 3 in Applied Science is a flexible unit based specification with knowledge and skills applied through contexts that lends itself to learners at post 16.

If you’re a technician in an FE college, sixth form college or school sixth form then you know that finding good practical work that fits into the units, has a context in the real world, is advanced enough and successful can be quite difficult.

When we asked school science technicians about their issues with the BTEC, their responses were “lack of guidance on practicals”, “instructions are sometimes vague”, “more practical ideas” and “some specialist content that technicians or teachers don’t know”.

This course has been designed to explore all those areas mentioned by the technicians, so we have researched and developed a range of practicals that:

• can be used in the BTEC applied science units
• have a strong link to the real world
• build students' practical skills and knowledge for the future

Trial the practicals and evaluate their effectiveness, learn where to source the equipment as economically as possible, develop your role in supporting students and teachers and go back into college or school with a set of practical worksheets and resources to use in your departments.
