Handling big data sets competently involves developing key skills central to both the computing and mathematics curricula. The task can seem daunting, but this course is designed to make big data accessible, rewarding and appealing. Freely available 'open data' can be easily accessed that provides insights into areas as diverse as crime, flooding, pollution, property sales, traffic, farming... the list goes on. Giving students ways to find meaning in these data sets can help them actively engage with the world around them, on subjects that are directly relevant to them and their locality.
This course serves as an introduction to open data and how to work with it. It includes a simple and repeatable process for identifying data sets and the questions they can answer, then using simple mathematical methods and Python data handling techniques to answer those questions.

Outcomes
You will be able to:
•introduce you to the huge range of open data that are available from many sources, and help you confidently find a way through it
•provide you with techniques to guide students through the process of formulating meaningful questions
•develop your ability to use Python data tools which are hugely powerful yet surprisingly straight-forward
•help you to impress upon students the potential for computing to greatly extend their own capabilities, and to open up career options in a fast-growing field
