Mathematical skills in triple science

Providing advice and guidance on the teaching of the more rigorous mathematics content of the new separate science GCSEs, including mathematics resources which science teachers can use to deepen students’ understanding of the mathematical concepts before applying them in science.

In order to be able to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding in science, students will need to be taught to select and apply the appropriate areas of mathematics relevant to each topic as set out in the GCSE science subject content. This mathematics will need to be taught at levels up to the requirements specified in GCSE mathematics, which will present challenges for many science teachers. Algebra and graphs

Algebra

The ability to use scientific formulae relies on the ability to communicate algebraically.

Interpreting graphs

Students often interpret graphs incorrectly because they do not consider the scale on each axis and may not think about the units involved.

Rate of change and area under the curve

This set of resources starts with the equation of a straight line in the form y=mx+c and checking the understanding that this represents a linear relationship.

Scatter diagrams and correlation

Students need to make data handling decisions that are informed by the context they are working with and Science is an ideal opportunity to do this.

Arithmetic and numerical computation

Make estimates of the results of simple calculations, without using a calculator

A classic mistake made by students is to think that when asked to estimate an answer if they work it out exactly they will get more marks.

Proportional reasoning

Proportional reasoning takes fractions, decimals, ratios or percentages and places them in a problem solving context.

Ratios, fractions, decimals and percentages

It is important that students understand that ratios, fractions, decimals and percentages are all just ways of describing divisions of a whole number.

Recognise expressions in decimal and standard forms

Many of the numbers that occur in science data sets and calculations are complex either by being very large (e.g. sizes of the scale of the universe) or very small (e.g. size of cell or electron).

Using significant figures

Mathematicians are quite happy to talk about exact numbers however big or small, but in Science a measurement stated as part of the results of a scientific experiment can NEVER be exact.

Handling data

Frequency tables, diagrams, bar charts and histograms

Students may be familiar with drawing a range of charts, diagrams and graphs but may have less experience interpreting exactly what they mean.

Mean, Mode and Median

Students often learn how to calculate measures of central tendency but do not really understand what they are doing or what information they are looking for.

Orders of Magnitude

Students will be expected to make order of magnitude calculations. For example, in cell biology, students will need to demonstrate an understanding of size and scale.

The principles of sampling applied to science

In the Biology GCSE, students will need to consider sampling in the context health, disease and the development of medicines.
