Plant diseases: GCSE *suitable for home teaching*
The activities in this resource relate to communicable plant diseases, the use of monoclonal antibody diagnostic tests (ELISA), and the use of genome sequencing in identifying plant pathogens. The activities are based around tasks carried out in the ‘real world’ by scientists working for organisations such as Fera.
Activities include:
What does a plant virologist do?
A flipped learning activity where students answer questions and carry out guided research based on the video of a plant virologist
Plant patient medical files
Students gather information about the symptoms and causes of common communicable plant diseases, information about how the disease is spread and potential ways to limit the spread. In the second part of the activity they then apply their knowledge to ‘diagnose’ some plant patients.
Sequence matching
Students take on the role of a scientist analysing given ‘DNA sequences’ from different batches of carrots. They need to match the sequences to a given information sheets and interpret the results to identify potential pathogens, food contaminates, and harmless organisms. Students then report back with their recommendations based on the findings.
Detecting plant viruses using the ELISA technique
