Route core element 3: Data
This resource list has been created to support the T Level Technical Qualification in Digital Support Services.
This section of the specification presents an opportunity to explore the use of data in information systems. RCE03 covers the types of information, uses of information, the tools that help model data for use in information systems and how access to data is controlled through access control.

Cisco packet tracer ACL
This resource uses Cisco Packet Tracer to control access to data and applies to R3.8 and R3.9. Cisco Packet Tracer is a tool that can be used throughout the course and is applicable to many elements. It is suggested that the learner has a familiarity with setting up a network in Cisco Packet Tracer before attempting this tutorial.
Microsoft Excel
There are many tutorials contained in this online course and they cover the main features of functions of Microsoft Excel. This resource will provide practical experience in coverage of R3.5, R3.6 and R3.7. The formatting worksheets and working with formula sections of the tutorial will be most useful.
Linux file system and structure explained
R3.5 requires an understanding of file and folder structures. This video covers the file and folder structure in the Linux operating system and is applicable to many other areas of the course as well.
Normalisation demonstration
This video covers the normalisation process and is a practical example to reinforce the theory learnt in class. This video is related to R3.5.
What is data visualisation, in 3 minutes?
R3.6 requires an understanding of the methods of presenting and visualising data. This video provides an overview of some of the techniques that can achieve this.
What is data analysis? Methods, processes and tools
This website provides details regarding the methods, processes and tools used when working with data. It is applicable to R3.1, R3.3 and R3.6. This resource can be used at the start of the module to provide an introduction to the key concepts involved.
Create a forecast in Excel for Windows
R3.6 requires an awareness of the methods of presenting and visualising data and their suitability for application. This link demonstrates how to apply a forecast to data in an Excel spreadsheet.
What is an access control list?
Access control lists are used to grant permission for accessing files and an understanding of their uses is required when entering the workplace. This link provides information in both a Windows and Linux environment and is related to R3.9.
Oracle VirtualBox
Virtual Box is an essential tool for lab work and simulations on the T-Level digital courses. It will provide useful for the practical subject in this element e.g. access control lists and the Linux file system. Please note this resource is an .exe file.
Kali Linux virtual machine
For practical exposure to the content of R3.8 and 3.9, a Linux environment would be useful. Kali Linux is an open-source distribution. Kali comes with many pre-installed tools and is an important free resource, this distribution can be imported into Virtual Box and VMware.
