Students often struggle with the fact that in science they tend to be coming at the problem of graphs from a different direction to the one they have experinced in mathematics. In mathematics we start from an equation and students are asked to draw the graph. In science more generally they are re-modelling real data and being asked to fit a curve to some real data and deduce its equation

It encourages students to get into the real meaning of graphical representation without getting confused by the algebraic calculations or focusing on computation without being able to see the bigger picture. It will also encourage the students to think about the various differences and similarities between growth processes in the sciences.
