Google in Educational
Google in Education (http://www.google.com/edu/) hold an international science competition and produce internet applications that can be used to enrich science teaching in the classroom.
Google Science Fair
The Google Science Fair is an international competition for students of school age in which they showcase their science abilities and investigations. Entrants submit a presentation on an original science project they have completed.
In keeping with the global nature of the competition, the prizes are also world-class. These have included once-in-a-lifetime experiences like a scientific trip to the Galapagos Islands, unique scholarships and real-life work opportunities in science centers of excellence like CERN in Switzerland.
Google Earth for Educators
Explore the Earth, look at lattitude and longitude, measure distances between locations and even show the stars visible in the night sky from your location.
Switch to Moon in Google Earth to see 3D models of landed spacecraft, 360-degree photos of astronauts’ footprints, Apollo missions. Zoom into distant galaxies, view constellations and hear astronomy podcasts. With Mars in Google Earth, you can explore a whole new planet. View NASA images, take tours, see 3D rover models and browse 360-degree panoramas.
Ocean lets you dive beneath the surface and explore the latest research discoveries.
Google Maps
Maps and satellite imagery that covers the earth. A great resource for looking at topics as diverse as the impacts of climate change to measuring distances of journeys to calculate an average speed.
20 Things About Browsers and the Internet
An on-line, illustrated book that describes how the internet was developed and how it is used. It is useful for students of ICT, computing and computer software development.
The book gives an overview of the following:
- What is the internet
- Cloud computing
- Web apps
- HTML, Java script and CSS
- Plug-ins, browser extensions and cookies
- IP addresses and DNS
- Security risks
- Open source browsers
How To (Technical Support)
Range of short instructional video clips on how to use computers. The clips cover a wide range of simple activities such as how to change your screensaver, browsing the internet, cutting and pasting in documents and using multimedia.
There are dozens of informational clips that could be useful for teachers of ICT.
Exploring Computational Thinking
A web-based resource which looks at the skills needed for the development of computer software. Computational Thinking involves a set of problem-solving skills and techniques that software engineers use to write programmess that underlie computer applications such as search, email, and maps. Useful for teachers of ICT, the site contains video tutorials, lesson, examples and a discussion forum.
How Google Search Works
Contains short videos and information that explain the technicalities behind how Google searches and indexes the internet. The content is relevant and suitable for students studying computer science or ICT.
