Probability (Years 7-9)
Below is a collection of possible resources which can be used across 5 lessons (approx). It includes resources which can be used in any order, depending entirely on the class in question. Resources can be altered and used to build a strong knowledge base, extend pupils further and assess learning. By David Main
Probability Article
This is an article that may be helpful to consider before starting a module on Probability. It includes many storys and explanations as to why probability is a difficult concept, and how it can sometimes be misleading. May prove useful in answering pupils questions.
Order of Likelihood
This resource poses a series of situations for pupils to order from likely to unlikely, and can provide interesting starting points for initial discussions.
Ordering Probabilities S1
This resource provides a Kinaesthetic task for pupils to explore the probability number line and then make the jump from using terminology like 'certain' and 'impossible' to using mathematical notation like 0, 1/2 and 1.
Probability
This collection of questions and expanations covers Single Event Probability (page number 126-133), then moves onto Double Event Probability, Sample Spaces, Listing Outcomes and Tree Diagrams (page number 134-143), ending finally with Experimental vs Theoretical Probability (page number 144-147).
Sheep Probability
A resource from Starter of the Day which provides a randomised selection of coloured sheep with questions attached. Useful once pupils have been introduced to the 'P(event)' rule, and can provide a link into Complimentary probability.
Using Probability Computer Games S3
This resource uses a variety of versions of the horse race probability, and could be used in conjunction with sample space diagrams to show how certain horses are more likely to come out at the end. The flash games included either use Coins or Dice to decide the winners.
Which Spinners?
A flash game that can be used to illustrate Experimental Probability as well as Relative-Frequency Probability.
Fair/Unfair Probability
An Nrich resource that can be used to illustrate Experimental Probabilty. Can also be used as part of a discussion as to whether the games are fair or unfair.
Experimental Probability
This resource can be used with a frequency table to start considering experimental probability. After running through approximatley 20 time, a class discussion could then be held to decide how more accurate results could be reached.
Unknown Probabilities
A task to really extend pupils. Pupils must decide how many balls are in a bag given certain restraints on the probabilities.
Answers included
Taking a Risk
A resource that provides a real-world link. Pupils are asked what are the probabilities of certain ships being attacked by pirates based on previous data. It then describes how an Actuary might use this information.
