Function machines for Year 7
This is a list I made for teaching function machines to Year 7. I'd supplement it with some work from the 10 ticks resources we have at school.
There isn't a lot on the eLibrary about function machines but, by supplementing the list with some Internet resources, I was able to get good coverage of the Y7 outcomes.
The students I have in mind are the ones who are really struggling in Year 7.
Number and Algebra 2
Page 81 onwards of this textbook contains practice on using function machines.
P81: 1-step functions (given input and given output) in words
P83: 2-step functions (given input and given output) in symbols
P85: inverse operations
Starting Algebra / Shape and Space
Activity 8 is two pages of exercises on the basics of function machines, for the students who are really struggling at the start of Year 7.
Aimed at Levels 2 and 3 it focuses on 1-step function machines using add and subtract only.
Interactive 1-step function machines
In this interactive game, you choose a machine with a given function (in symbols). Given an input number you have to guess the output number before the machine displays it.
Useful as a starter or plenary, again aimed at lower ability levels.
Digital 7 1-step function machines
In this interactive game, you are given a series of function machines with either the input, output or function missing. You have to work out the missing information and enter it.
Useful as a starter or plenary, again aimed at lower ability levels.
ncetm - multiple representations of functions
This isn't really suitable for the level I'm targetting just as it is, but a subset of the cards could be used (just the functions and the function machines or just the input-output lists and the function machines.
Ambleside Primary interactive function machine
This interactive game can be used to give practice on identifying the function given the input and the output
NGFL Wales - function machine worksheet
A bit more challenging but there's not a lot of work here.
