Time
At my school we currently use the new Edexcel modular specification, which has a high level of functional maths, and in Unit 1 there is a large focus on time. Pupils need to be able to read the time, convert between 12 and 24 hour clocks, work out the difference between two times, read from timetables and plan schedules. Often teachers make assumptions of the level of knowledge for this topic, and it was alarming to see many pupils fail a past exam question where they simply had to draw the arms on a clock to represent a given time. This list aims to bring together resources in order to support the teaching and learning of this topic.
Money and Time
This activity covers many of the basic time topics, for example converting between 12 and 24 hour clock, working out time differences, and working out wages based on hours worked. The file "money and time" can be used as a workbook for pupils, the "overhead slides" file can be used for worksheets, "mental tests" are designed to be given verbally, but if you print one off and delete out the answers using corrector fluid they can be copied and used as class tests, and "extra exercises" is a more compact version of the workbook.
Time and Timetables
This resource starts at the very basics of time: how to tell the time on a clock face and how to write a time in numbers when given words. It then moves on to 12 and 24 hour conversions, converting units of time, timetables, and time problems in context. It is an extremely comprehensive resource that should cover most time topics. The file "time and timetables" could be used as a workbook for pupils as it gives step by step guidance in each section, the file "overhead slides" could be used as worksheets, the file "mental tests" is designed to be given verbally, but if you print one copy and delete the answers you can quickly produce a class set of tests, "extra exercises" is a more compact version of the workbook without the guidance.
Speed, Distance and Time
I don't think this is the easiest resource I've found for Speed, Distance and Time, but it is certainly the most comprehensive. There's a host of questions, finding each element of the equation, it also covers distance time graphs and other compound measures. The file "speed, distance and time" could be used as a workbook for pupils, "overhead slides" can be used for worksheets, "extra exercises" is a more compact version of the workbook, and "mental tests", though designed to be delivered verbally, can easily be adapted to use as class tests.
Cre8 Salon
At my school we are actually directed to use this activity, it is embedded into our scheme of work for Year 10s. Pupils are required to pull information from from a variety of sources in order to plan a schedule for a salon. Pupils have to fit in various customers' requirements, work out costs and percentage discounts. It also offers various suggestions for extending the activity e.g. adding in breaks for the staff. It is a long activity that can take a couple of lessons, therefore the main difficulty is keeping pupils on task - I would recommend pupils complete it in pairs, or in groups of three at most.
