Pythagoras and Trigonometry
This unit is aimed at pupils that have studied Pythagoras' Theorem before, but need a refresher before being introduced to Trigonometry.
Lesson 1 - Use the youtube videos to promote discussion and review Pythagoras' Theorem. The Thinking Skills worksheet can be used to extend pupils' understanding. The flash activity can be used as a plenary review.
Lesson 2 - Powerpoint presentation that aims to allow pupils to discover the rules of trigonometry
Lesson 3/4 - Flash resource "Random Trig" and card sort ask questions involving finding angles and finding sides
Lesson 5/6 - Worksheet to extend pupils.
Water demonstration of Pythagoras
A youtube video that demonstrates Pythagoras' therorem by pouring water between different containers. It might be worth illustrating to pupils the difference between a proof and an example.
Was Pythagoras wrong?
A youtube video that appears to demonstrate how the Great Pythagoras may have been wrong. Use this to generate discussion amongst pupils. Could it be that the squares are not really squares? Or maybe that the right angle triangle is not really right angled?
Thinking skills Pythagoras Worksheet
Questions about Pythagoras that test thinking skills such as "why is this triangle right angled?"
Trigonometry matching activity
A matching activity that presents triangles with missing angles and sides along with the calculations. Pupils match the triangle with the relevant calculation.
Extension Trigonometry
An extension activity to challenge the most able.
