IET Education Primary Resources

This collection provides lots of STEM challenges and resources linked to science and design and technology topics in the primary curriculum. Many support learning skills across the curriculum and can also be run as a project.

The challenge day resources support teachers in running their own aerospace engineers or lighthouse keeper transfer challenge day with children. They can be used to enhance the curriculum as children need to apply existing knowledge of electrical circuits, forces, design and construction in an integrated project. Although the challenges are designed to be delivered across one day they can also be split into smaller parts and used over several weeks or within a STEM Club.

Further resources within this collection can be linked to a variety of topics and themes, such as World Book Day, food and nutrition, plants, animals and mathematics.

Investigating simple linkages

Investigating simple linkages using card models.

A mechanism is a device that changes movement in some way. Linkages are a type of mechanism. There are different types of linkage, each of which change movement in different ways.

This could be used in Key Stage 2 as a stand-alone activity or as an...

How to make a grabber

This resource could be used as a short design and make project in Key Stage 2, or as the design and modelling stages of a project to make a grabber out of resistant materials.

In this activity, students will make a 'grabber' device from card.

Design a futuristic backpack

In this activity pupils will use of the theme of new and future technologies to design a futuristic backpack. They will discuss the purpose of backpacks and why they are used. They will then produce a labelled sketch of their design idea to meet the given design brief and criteria. Pupils can self or peer-assess...

Spaghetti structures

This activity could be used in Key Stage 2 as a stand-alone activity, as a focused task to develop skills in the use of the glue gun, or as an introduction to a design and make project, such as the spaghetti bridges.

In this activity, students develop both their skills in using a glue gun and demonstrate...
