Hillcroft Primary School, Pfizer and STEM Learning: working together to encourage young people into science careers

Hillcroft Primary School in Surrey has partnered with STEM Learning (London and the South East England STEM Ambassador Hub) and leading global biopharmaceutical company Pfizer to inspire young people with the world of STEM careers.

Working with the school’s science teachers, trained Pfizer STEM Ambassadors have delivered its flagship ‘Science in a Box’ programme at the local primary school only a few miles down the road from the Pfizer UK commercial headquarters.

Science in a Box is an interactive programme that brings to life how medicines are made. Using puzzles, board games, quizzes and presentations, students are guided by Pfizer STEM Ambassadors through a programme of eight, hands-on modules which build knowledge about medicines development and the role of the pharmaceutical industry.

With many young people often unaware of the different routes into a STEM-focused career, Science in a Box enables Pfizer STEM Ambassadors to showcase the exciting range of career options in the life sciences industry and the career paths available, from apprenticeships and vocational qualifications to university degrees.

Sam Gyimah, local MP for East Surrey and the Government’s Universities and Science Minister, was in attendance to meet with students as the programme was delivered.

STEM Learning Chief Executive, Yvonne Baker, said:

“I am delighted to welcome the Science Minister Sam Gyimah MP here to see the wonderful work being done by STEM Ambassadors, supported by the Department for Business (BEIS). It’s a great example of how STEM Learning is bringing together businesses and schools to build STEM skills by inspiring young people and giving them a world-leading STEM education.”

Margaret Mortlock, Science in a Box Lead and Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, Pfizer UK, said:

“It is so important that young people are engaged, inspired and enthused by science from a young age and that we support and nurture new talent to be at the forefront of scientific discovery.

"We are seeing Science in a Box do just that, and it is our ambition to come together with stakeholders across Parliament and the education and science sectors to discuss how we can continue to support Britain’s future as a global leader in STEM after Brexit and for many years to come.”

Tom Holloway, Primary Science Lead, Hillcroft Primary School, said:

“We are delighted to have partnered with STEM Learning and Pfizer today to deliver this exciting programme at Hillcroft. It has been a fantastic opportunity for our students to see science brought to life in the classroom and to understand what a future in STEM could hold.”
