KS1 Information technology
Children in Key Stage One can develop their understanding of computing, using a range of resources to meet the new National Curriculum Objectives for Information Technology, including: use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content. Recognise common uses of information technology beyond school.
Inside My Mobile
This short task helps students to find out what is inside a mobile phone by building their own paper one. This paper-based resource highlights the key components inside a mobile phone. Students can use it to create their own paper mobile phone with space for components inside. Instructions are also included for its use as a two-player game, similar to beetle - throw the dice to get a component and complete your mobile phone.
IT beyond the school
A collection of lessons exploring how IT is used in various non-school settings, a supermarket, a bank and a library.
Students role play what happens to tins of beans is a supermarket. How they are tracked using a list (database) and removed from the list when they are bought. How when the list is empty tins of beans are ordered from the warehouse or bean manufacturer.
Students role play earning money. As money is earned it is stored electronically in a bank and removed using cash machines and debit cards at the shop. This process is simplified to help key stage 1 students develop a basic understanding of how a bank works.
Students role play what happens to a book when it is borrowed from the library. How they are tracked using a list (database) which records if they are in or out of the library.
Creating Media - Digital Painting
In this unit of work, Year 1 pupils will develop their understanding of a range of tools used for digital painting. They then use these tools to create their own digital paintings, whilst gaining inspiration from a range of artists’ work. The unit concludes with learners considering their own preferences when painting with and without the use of digital devices. This unit covers key areas of the computing curriculum:
- To use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content,
- Recognise common uses of information technology beyond school.
Creating Media - Digital Writing
In this unit of work, Year 1 pupils will develop their understanding of various aspects of using a computer to create and manipulate text. Pupils will become more familiar with using a keyboard and mouse to enter and remove text. Pupils will also consider how to change the look of their text and justify their reasoning in making these changes. This unit concludes by asking pupils to consider the differences between using a computer to create text and writing text on paper.
Creating Media - Digital Photography
In this unit, Year 2 pupils will learn to recognise that different devices can be used to capture photographs and they will gain experience capturing, editing and improving photographs. Towards the end of the unit, pupils will use their knowledge to recognise that images they see may not be real. This unit provided by the National Centre for Computing Education covers key areas of the Key Stage 1 computing curriculum;
- To use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content,
- Recognise common uses of information technology beyond school,
- Use technology safely and respectfully.
Creating media - Digital music
n this unit, Year 2 pupils will learn to use a computer to create music. They will listen to a variety of pieces of music and consider how music makes the feel. Pupils will compare creating music in a digital format and using untuned percussion instruments. To end the unit pupils will look at patterns and create their own musical compositions using skills of tempo, pitch and rhythm. This unit provided by the National Centre for Computing Education covers key areas of the Key Stage 1 computing curriculum;
- To use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content,
- Recognise common uses of information technology beyond school,
- Use technology safely and respectfully.
