STEM Workshop: Robotics
In the "Make a Driverless Car" workshop, students design and program an autonomous vehicle using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® technology. The car follows user-defined driving commands, simulating how autonomous cars navigate city streets. Through building and coding exercises, students explore the mechanics of autonomous systems, using arrays to store and execute movement commands. The workshop concludes with students presenting their final designs, demonstrating how their projects reflect real-world applications of driverless technology
1. Understanding Autonomous Systems
Students will gain foundational knowledge in autonomous vehicle systems, including the principles of programming, sensor input, and decision-making processes used in driverless technology.
2. Design and Engineering Skills
Through hands-on building exercises with LEGO® MINDSTORMS®, students will learn essential engineering principles, understanding the mechanics of assembling and optimising a vehicle's design to navigate various obstacles and tasks.
3. Programming and Problem-Solving Abilities
Students will develop coding skills, including using arrays to store and execute commands, enabling their vehicles to perform specific movements. This experience encourages logical thinking and problem-solving as they troubleshoot and refine their code.
4. Practical Application of STEM Concepts
By simulating real-world conditions, students will appreciate how the skills they learn translate into real-life applications, as they observe their designs perform tasks akin to those of modern driverless cars.
5. Presentation and Communication Skills
At the workshop's end, students will present their final designs, explaining their engineering decisions and demonstrating the vehicle's functionality. This fosters confidence and communication skills, important in STEM fields.
