Students receive a text message on their team smart phone with clear instructions on where they need to go. Private mini busses are provided for groups that need to walk for more than 10 minutes between locations.

Each crime scene will require different laboratory techniques to solve, these can range from blood typing and bacterial analysis to DNA finger printing and ELISA for identification of proteins. Scientific techniques and concepts covered align with the GCSE or A-level syllabus studied by students.

To help maintain the mystery of the trip, teachers are asked not to divulge the crime scene locations or stories to their students.
