Summary

This course introduces a range of digital tools and devices which can be used to support learning in primary science.

Explore the importance of digital skills within primary science and their relevance to the subject, especially working scientifically and learn the importance of digital skills when using secondary sources to answer questions and how to support pupils in building their research skills.

  • You will gain hands-on experience using digital technology which allows pupils to record, report and present their findings in a collaborative manner.
  • You will explore the use of digital devices for data collection, handling and representation and consider how they develop pupils’ understanding in science whilst also developing digital skills. This course will enable you to support pupils in developing practical expertise to use devices to collect and log data from a variety of sources.
  • You will learn about using data-loggers in the science classroom, and some alternative digital tools that can be used if you don’t have data loggers available including apps and the BBC micro: bit - a small micro-computer, which can be programmed to work as a datalogger.
  • You will gain practical experience of how to use these digital tools to collect data, how to view the stored data and how use data handling software to represent it in tables, charts and graphs.
  • You will explore how to use technology to both bring science to life and to provide alternative recording methods. You will learn how to use technology such as AR and simulations to make the hard-to-see visible and the over-time instant. You will increase your confidence using alternative recording methods such as video creation and time lapse to record learning in science.
