Summary

BeeBots: during this session explore how Bee-Bots can be used in the classroom to teach simple algorithms and programming.  How to use the device to introduce children to programming, why physical computing devices help pupils understand debugging and explore how to use the device with children. The CPD will help you gain confidence in teaching using Bee-Bots, and the free Teach Computing Curriculum.

Micro:Bit: during this session you’ll learn how to get started with the micro:bit, exploring the in-built buttons, LEDs, and sensors for detecting movement, sound, light and heat. You’ll find out how to setup the device, how to attach add-ons to make use of the inputs and outputs, and how to teach using micro:bit, making use of freely available resources.

Crumble: during this session explore how Crumble can be used in the classroom, with blocks of code ‘snapping’ together in an easy-to-use, Scratch-like environment suitable for key stage 2. You’ll find out how to setup the device, how to make use of input and output terminals and explore how to use the device with children.  In order to reduce the load on the wifi please download the following software before attending the day crumble - Crumble Software | Redfern Electronics

Literacy via primary computing: The national curriculum states that teachers should develop pupils’ spoken language, reading, writing and vocabulary as integral aspects of the teaching of every subject. This CPD will support you to do just this in computing. You will learn how to embed the teaching of vocabulary effectively throughout your computing curriculum and discover opportunities for building reading, writing, and spoken language into computing lessons.  It will also help you demystify the technical terms by building your own confidence and understanding of this subject-specific vocabulary.

We can support you in enhancing the computing curriculum within schools

Your local computing hub can provide loanable physical kits enabling you to implement activities using these devices in your classroom.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

BeeBots

  • Recognise the impact physical computing has on engaging all pupils in computing
  • Understand how Bee-Bots can be used to teach early programming concepts and computational thinking.
  • Understand how the Teach Computing Curriculum KS1 units can be delivered with Bee-Bots.

Micro:bit

  • gain hands-on experience and confidence using the micro:bit
  • explore pedagogy and lesson activities that make effective use of physical computing in the classroom
  • plan to implement physical computing in the classroom making use of loaned equipment from your local computing hub

Crumble

  • Understand the impact physical computing has on engaging students in computing
  • Lead children to create block based programs to control the Crumble
  • Understand how the Teach Computing Curriculum unit can be delivered with the Crumble

Literacy

  • Understand the importance of, and challenges in teaching primary computing vocabulary.
  • Know strategies for the teaching of primary computing vocabulary.
  • Identify opportunities for cross curricular literacy and computing activities.
