Summary
This practical outdoor session provides ideas for curriculum-linked primary science lessons outdoors. Benefits and barriers to outdoor learning will be discussed, as well as an opportunity for delegates to consider how to plan to teach primary science outdoors. Assessment and recording opportunities outdoors will be woven into the session.
The session will include:
- Characteristics of effective outdoor learning
- Exploring how Working Scientifically and Conceptual Understanding curriculum objectives can be taught in the outdoor session
- Exploring assessment and recording in the outdoor session
Helen Spring CSciTeach is a Primary Science and Outdoor Learning Consultant serving the Yorkshire region and beyond. With a wealth of experience as a teacher and science subject leader, Helen specialises in primary science and outdoor learning. She is also the author of the book, 'Teaching Primary Science Outdoors'. Helen's expertise lies in supporting primary science subject leaders and teachers, assisting them in enhancing the quality of their science teaching and learning.
Helen is the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) Regional Lead for the North East and Scotland as well as a hub leader in both the North East and Yorkshire. Helen works as a Primary Consultant for CLEAPSS, supporting schools with practical. Additionally, Helen leads the education programme at Howsham Mill in North Yorkshire, leading outdoor science workshops. Helen also plays a vital role within the Association for Science Education as the co-chair of their Primary Science Committee.
