This series of four afternoon sessions will provide you with the insights you need to both develop and lead science in a special school setting. The sessions will cover the following themes:
- Session 1: appropriate activities, stage not age
- Session 2: curriculum and working scientifically
- Session 3: assessment and progression
- Session 4: the role of the science lead and monitoring
Each session will include input from a guest speaker, who will share their first hand experience in teaching and leading science in a special school setting.
For every place booked, you can also BRING A COLLEAGUE FOR FREE.
We have 50% funding available for maintained schools in England. The full price of £300 will be invoiced upon booking, however, after payment and completion of the course, £150 will be refunded back to your school, bringing the final cost down to only £150.

Who is the course leader?
Outcomes
Session 1 – appropriate activities, stage not age
Session 1 has the following key outcomes:
- To understand what makes an effective activity to support children as learners.
- To support you build up a bank of ideas and activities to support children’s key science skills, attitudes and concept development.
Session 2 – curriculum and working scientifically
Session 2 has the following key outcomes:
- To understand the different aspects of working scientifically and their impact for children with SEND.
- To understand the features of an inclusive and accessible science curriculum.
Session 3 – assessment and progression
Session 3 has the following key outcomes:
- To provide you with examples of a range of assessment tools for use in the special school setting.
- To understand the stages of thinking in learners and the features of science teaching that supports progression.
Session 4 – the role of the science lead and monitoring
Session 4 has the following key outcomes:
- To help you understand the roles and responsibilities of a science lead.
- To provide you with a range of exemplar strategies for leading science in a special school setting.
