Summary
An application for a major ‘out of town’ retail and leisure development has been submitted by a commercial development company. Will the Council’s planning committee support the suggestions of the enterprising, creative contributors who want to develop the land, boost the local economy, and create jobs? Or will the objections of ethically, informed citizens who want to protect the landscape for future generations, sway them to reject the proposal?
More than just a geographical location, the term ‘cynefin’ can be used to describe our relationship with the natural environment and how that connection shape’s our identity, well-being, and sense of belonging. The course will offer participants an opportunity to reflect on the history, culture, spirituality, and heritage of the area whilst exploring the concept of cynefin.
This training session will share a range of cross-curricular activities that will provide educators with ideas to encourage learning in, learning about and learning for the natural environment. With the Curriculum for Wales as a guide, participants will consider the merits/drawbacks of the planning application through the 6 areas of learning and experience.
This training course offers face to face training in partnership with STEM Learning UK and Techniquest. A £165 ‘Enthuse Bursary’ is available per attending teacher to pay towards supply cover.

Outcomes
Educators will:
- Explore the concept of ‘cynefin’ and will consider it’s significance
- Complete cross-curricular outdoor learning activities and challenges which incorporate the 6 Areas of Learning and Experience.
- Investigate what impact the proposal could have on the natural environment and on human health and well-being.
- Consider how the proposal could change the visual, sensory, historic and cultural character of the area if successful.
