Supporting enrichment and enhancement in your school: Nettles Project RM198 / B120
Summary
Are you ready to boost the science capital of your Year 6 pupils before Secondary school? Are you ready for a challenge and an opportunity to work with scientists in your classroom? If the answer is year then the nettles project is for you. The Project is based upon the Royal Society Grant application for primary schools- where we will do the hard work for you! In this activity Scientists and researchers will work with primary schools. This engagement is based on the finding that if rubbing dock leaves on nettle stings will take away the pain – the theory is related to the scientific idea of acid, alkali neutralisation, which would therefore make this an ideal project for engagement with Y6 children in the summer term. The activity will:
- Last for at least a half term
- Create a partnership with a scientist from industry or academia
- Involve the STEM partner on site supporting the students at least twice per half term
- Be inclusive and enable as many young people as possible to be involved.
The project will enable science leads to increase science capital by enabling the children to get to know a STEM Ambassador and will support the science capital aspect ‘Knowing people in science-related roles’.
It will also increase pupils’ scientific literacy as they find out, through their own research, if rubbing a dock leaf works. After completing the project your school can claim back additional £45 from Kent & Medway SLP (fully funded after completion).
*Teachers at maintained schools can access a £50 subsidy which is paid back directly by STEM Learning after attending the course. Please use the following discount code at the time of booking: TRP2223
