Maths in the secondary science curriculum: Graphs RC367 / C01
Summary
Develop subject knowledge and teaching strategies to confidently deliver the graphing elements of the GCSE science specifications. Apply these skills, using appropriate resources, in biology, physics and chemistry contexts. The course covers sketching graphs, interpreting graphs and drawing graphs.
Who is it for?
Teachers of GCSE science
What topics are covered?
Sketching Graphs
· Explain the purpose of graphs and how this may be conveyed in a science context.
· discuss the issues surrounding the teaching and learning of ‘graphs’ in a science context
· consider the value of ‘sketching’ graphs to develop interpretation and graph drawing skills
Interpreting Graphs
· explain how the use of variables are vital when interpreting graphs
· discuss how to approach reading information from graphs, including distance-time graphs and the area under a graph
· explore the marking of these types of questions and student misconceptions
Drawing Graphs
· explain how to draw appropriate scales
· find the gradient of a straight line from first principles
· use the equation of a straight line in a science context
· explain what is, and when to use, the average gradient
· use techniques to find the gradient at a point on a curve
