Summary

This series of workshops is designed to support Teachers of SEND and Teaching Assistants across Key Stages 3 and 4 to maximise impact and progression for learners across the Science curriculum. 

The network is split into a series of 6 workshops, the content of which is outlined below. We are able to offer all maintained schools a bursary of 67% on completion of the course reducing the overall cost to just £247.50 . This will be refunded to the school by STEM on completion of the course once the BACS form is submitted. 

Introduction

  • An overview of the Science curriculum related to SEND teaching
  • A discussion around how to promote higher order thinking in SEND students

Classroom strategies

  • Asking questions to promote progress
  • Vocabulary for SEND
  • The importance of oracy for SEND students

Scaffolding lessons

  • Differentiation
  • Scaffolding writing
  • Strategies for breaking tasks down
  • The TA toolkit

Teaching resources

  • What makes a good resource?
  • How to avoid cognitive overload
  • Using IT to support learners
  • Making the most of our environment – taking learning outside the classroom

Practical work

  • Why we do it – making it purposeful
  • Adapting an activity for a purpose
  • Demonstration or hands on activity?

You will:

  • deepen your understanding of the barriers that SEND students may face and the support we need to provide to help them overcome these barriers,
