Summary

Learn about, or develop and enhance your knowledge of, how computers actually work through the amazing historical and contemporary computing collection and resources at The Centre for Computing History in Cambridge.

This event is designed to literally put in your hands the components that make computers work, turning those photos and diagrams into physical reality, and allowing participants to develop a fuller 'hands on' understanding of the concepts that we usually teach in the abstraction of the classroom setting.

The afternoon will begin with a tour of the Centre, taking in the development of computing through history, and highlighting the conceptual and rudimentary beginnings that underpin how modern computers work. This is followed by a session looking at memory and storage, and a session exploring the extraordinary room size mega-processor which clearly shows how all the components of the CPU work together to run programs. Participants will have the opportunity to learn and execute programs in assembly language.

There will also be the opportunity to discover what the Centre and NCCE can further offer you and your students.

There will be time at the end to fully explore the Centre for yourself, including the excellent retro gaming area.
