Physics of flight SP200 / B24

Start date

Duration
1 Hour
Location
Virtual, MS Teams, Remote Delivered CPD View on Google Map

Summary

With a particular focus on forces, Steve will describe how an understanding of physics is essential to all aspects of aviation, from drones to gliders.  Starting with the basics of forces acting on an aircraft, participants will extend their understanding in terms of turning forces, angle of attack and the basics of lift to describe how conventional fixed wing aircraft fly, and the action of the control surfaces to keep the aircraft flying. After touching on rotary wings and drones, Steve will focus particularly on the operation of gliders and how these graceful unpowered craft can reach altitudes of over 10 kilometres and remain airborne for hours at a time at speeds of over 100km/hr.

Suitable for both specialist and non-specialist teachers of physics across all key stages.

Outcomes

At the end of this session you will have some relevant, detailed and interesting context for teaching the physics of forces, particularly Newton’s Laws and kinematics but also touching on pressure, energy and turning forces.
