Outcomes
By the end of this CPD track / package you will be able to:
Introduction to computer systems, networking and security in computer science:
- Learn how data is inputted into a computer, how it is processed, stored and output in a useful form
- Develop a basic understanding of local and global computer networks
- Become knowledgeable and confident in using common cybersecurity terms
Computer processors and instruction sets:
- Recognise that all computer instructions are executed in binary – and the different processes used to translate programming languages into computer-readable machine code
- Recognise the Von Neumann architecture, and different instruction sets including RISC and CISC
- Understand the fetch-decode-execute cycle in a computer processor, and the role of each CPU component
- Write simple programs in low-level assembler language
- Know the factors that can affect CPU performance
Fundamentals of computer networks:
- Understand the main reasons why computers are connected to share data.
- Know the layout and key hardware devices in networks for GCSE computer science.
- Understand the different transmission methods used when networking, including the characteristics of different wired methods and Wi-Fi.
