Summary
The purpose of these sessions is to provide a platform for colleagues to share their experience and gather ideas for developing their practice.Session 1: Graphs: What skills can we expect our students to have? What do we need to explicitly teach in the context of science lessons?Session 2: Algebra: What are common misconceptions? How can we move our students from the abstract work of maths to concrete application in science?
Vanessa King thought she would make her mark on the world by being a really good biology teacher, but a move to the UK from Australia in 2002 forged a different path. She became a maths specialist and now teaches physics (which would be a pleasant surprise to her A-level physics teacher), in addition to being a reasonably good biology teacher. She is particularly interested in helping students use maths techniques in their science lessons to reduce their cognitive load and sharing her experience with teaching colleagues. Vanessa teaches at George Abbot School in Guildford, Surrey.
