Teach computing reach and engagement event - Assembly Language - Taking it beyond GCSE CJ303 / F03
Summary
Description
This session is aimed at secondary teachers who have some experience of Computing and are familiar with basic computer architecture of processor, registers, buses and main memory.
In this workshop we will briefly cover the sort of content required by GCSE specifications, but aim to provide some context. Why is assembly language studied – where does the GCSE content lead to?
We will then have a look at some typical A-level content as a taster or refresher. We will also have a look at some undergraduate/real world applications of assembly language with the aim of providing an improved context for our teaching.
Relevant Key Stages: KS4, KS5
Preparation for the session:
This session will have some ‘hands on’ activities. It would be helpful if you could have tabs open and ready for Peter Higginson’s versions of the Little Man Computer. For GCSE level: https://peterhigginson.co.uk/lmc/ and for A level: https://www.peterhigginson.co.uk/AQA/
Who is the course leader?

- Explore the context for teaching assembly language
- Review specification content on assembly language at GCSE for the main exam boards.
- Review how the LMC can be used at GCSE.
