Summary

How to create and manipulate SQL databases in Python using SQLite

Description

In this workshop we will use the Python SQLite library to work with databases through Python code.  We will cover the following areas:

  • SQLite – what it is

  • Creating a database and tables

  • Manipulating data (inserting, updating, selecting and deleting).

  • An overview of a login system

Structured Query Language (SQL) is included in the current AQA and OCR GCSE Computer Science specification. This workshop will give you the confidence to delivery this part of the specification with pupils in a practical way. This workshop will also be useful for teachers who want pupils to complete programming project and want to use an alternative to storing data in text files.

Relevant Key Stages: KS4, KS5

Preparation for the session:

Whilst this is a remote session, it would be great to make this session as hands on as possible.  If you would like to try some of the examples provided in the session, please have available a device that has a Python IDE installed that works with the SQLite3 library.  Two simple options are:

  • Using a device with the Python IDLE installed.  This can be obtained from: https://www.python.org/downloads/ .  This will allow you to use Python and SQLite3

OR

  • An account on replit.com.  You can create an account for free and can use this platform to program in Python using SQLite3
