Summary
This course will provide a thorough grounding in the science technician profession and is suitable for those new to the role within a school or college. Through a range of intensive hands on sessions we will explore the necessary basic skills a science technicians needs to effectively prepare practical lessons.
This course will be delivered over a number of sessions, some of which will be delivered remotely on the days and times detailed below, with those later in the year being delivered face to face at the National STEM Learning Centre in York. To participate in full, you will need to ensure you have dedicated time away from the classroom for the remotely delivered elements of this course, as you would if this were a face to face course. We will take regular breaks and structure the content so that it is interactive and impactful. You must attend all sessions in order to receive the bursary, and sessions will not be recorded. The course is split into two three-day periods. The first part will be delivered remotely and concentrates on core technical skills and includes sessions on health and safety, solutions and gas making, glass working, soldering, greenhouse science, microbiology, repairing equipment and working as a science technician.
The second residential period introduces further practical skills in chemistry, biology, physics and electronics with additional health and safety session on manual handling and fire safety.
This course includes an online component to extend and embed your CPD. It will provide you with support whilst back at school or college, and enable you to collaborate with others and to share experiences and resources. You will receive support to enable you to complete your action plan or gap task and you will also be able to access the online learning community after this period. The online component is an integral part of the course and has been included in the fee and the associated ENTHUSE Bursary. Normal terms and conditions apply.
This is a residential course, fees include meals and accommodation for the duration of the course.

Outcomes
You will be able to:

- describe and apply policies, procedures and actions that will lead to an effective and efficient technical service

- understand the roles and responsibilities of a science technicians in education

Notes
The National STEM Learning Centre will be following all government guidance and regulations to minimise risk of Covid-19 transmission, including the deep cleaning of our accommodation and teaching rooms and maintaining social distancing during course sessions and meal times.

Our remote CPD courses for teachers are delivered across a series of sessions run at specific times and dates. Information on all course sessions can be found under the description of each course. To complete a course, all sessions are mandatory.
