Summary

Lockdown 3.0: Supporting disadvantaged students and preventing attainment gaps 

Following the events of the January 2021 lockdown, the issues of ‘lost learning’, widening attainment gaps and progress of disadvantaged students remains at the forefront of education.  In this network meeting, we will explore some of the evidence and research around these themes and look at practical strategies and ideas that can be used to address them. We will consider the latest research-based evidence and the key considerations behind high quality teaching - and how this can ultimately support disadvantaged learners. We will also hear from Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education on how they are supporting students with their learning in STEM subject areas 

Agenda:

  1. Reflections on the first few weeks of 2021. A review of the news headlines, followed by an interactive discussion and opportunity to share your views
  2. Supporting high quality teaching and learning - research based evidence and strategies to support disadvantaged students
  3. Case study: Strategies being used to support disadvantaged students. A look at how Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education is supporting disadvantaged students within STEM subject areas
  4. Reflection and discussion
  5. Updates on resources and opportunities

Outcomes

You will be able to: 

  • work collaboratively to identify priorities in science teaching and learning
  • share and develop strategies to tackle issues, drawing on expertise as needed from outside the network

Please note that this is part of a series of four planned remote network events that are scheduled throughout academic year 2020/21.
