Summary
For teachers delivering key stage 3 science who are not science graduates, you will focus on the subject knowledge and key principals needed to teach science effectively
Are you an non-scientist teaching key stage 3 science? Would you like to feel more confident in your own subject knowledge in biology, chemistry and physics so you can better answer student questions and deal with misconceptions?
This course has been designed to focus on the subject knowledge and key principles needed to teach science effectively. We will explore and refine the understanding of key topics like energy, cells and chemical reactions. We will develop your confidence to work in a laboratory with emphasis on practical and demonstration technique and look at scaffolding the learning to show rapid and sustained progression.

Teachers of science at key stage 3 who are not science graduates
What topics are covered?
We shall cover subject knowledge and pedagogical approaches to:
- forces
- electricity
- ecosystems
- cells and organisms
- the particle theory and the properties of matter
- earth science and the atmosphere

Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- develop your subject knowledge to confidently deliver biology, chemistry and physics to key stage 3
- teach Key Stage 3 science confidently by effectively using a range of teaching strategies to assess students’ prior understanding, counter misconceptions and move learning forward
- identify resources which will assist you in your delivery of high quality science lessons
