Metacognition & self regulated learning in science RH298 / E15
The course is divided into 3 sections:
What is metacognition?
- explain what metacognition and self-regulated learning skills are and why they are important
- identify some key barriers to building metacognitive skills
- understand the roles and interplay of knowledge, planning, monitoring and evaluation in building metacognitive approaches to solving problems
Developing metacognition through challenge and talk
- understand how challenge can motivate or demotivate learners
- discover how to promote and develop metacognitive talk in science
Developing a culture for self-regulated learning
- explore further strategies which support the development of metacognition and self-regulated learning
- plan to develop a culture for self-regulated learning in science
The course will last for 2 hours. At the end of each section independent tasks will be presented for participants to complete. Completed tasks can be uploaded onto the STEM group page to share with others.

Participants from outside the UK will be charged the course fee and an additional £120 per day plus VAT.
For courses at the National STEM Learning Centre in York, fees include meals and accommodation for the duration of the course.
