Summary
Online course. This course provides guidance in all aspects of management of practical activities in the secondary science laboratory. You will look at classroom layout, routines and movement around the room. You will consider the purpose of practical work to maximise learning, create the right climate for collaborative learning and explore how to simplify more complex practical work using microscale set ups or integrated instructions.
Who is it for?
- Teachers of science to students aged 11-19 years old
- Newly qualified, recently qualified and non-scientists teaching in a laboratory setting
What topics are covered?
This three week course covers:
- Department processes for practical work: behaviour management, health and safety and department policies, room layout
- Classroom culture for practical work: climate for learning, the purpose of practical work
- Maximising learning through practical work: demonstrations, instructions, group work
Outcomes
You will be able to:
- Reflect upon your current laboratory management and identify areas for development
- Develop your toolkit of strategies and techniques to manage students safely in the laboratory
- Create a practical learning environment that facilitates independent learning and resilience
- Design practical lessons to maximise student learning through practical science
