Summary

Demonstrations can be used to enrich understanding across the sciences. It is important that teachers have opportunities to improve their skills and confidence in carrying out demonstrations and to extend the repertoire of demonstrations available to them.  Through this course we seek to enhance the skills of teachers, particularly those in their probationary year or those recently qualified, so as to allow them to utilise demonstrations in the delivery of the curriculum.

There is a long and rich tradition, especially in the physical sciences, of demonstrations being used to support learning. Through this course we will explore topics in chemistry and physics where pupils’ understanding can be enhanced by using demonstrations. The course will be of interest to all teachers of science but principally those teaching chemistry.  We believe the course will be of particular value for Probationers and those who have recently qualified. Participants will have opportunities to prepare and trial a wide range of demonstrations as well as considering associated health and safety issues.

To apply for this course please contact SSERC directly enquiries@sserc.scot who will forward you the necessary information.  Shortly after the published closing date for applications the administration team at SSERC will send to successful applicants:

confirmation of an offer of a place on the course together with details on enrolment procedures
information on ENTHUSE bursaries and how to apply for such a bursary
a set of terms and conditions which you must meet in order to qualify for an ENTHUSE bursary
If you are a supply teacher you may still qualify for an ENTHUSE bursary – please contact SSERC to establish your eligibility.
