Summary

We are pleased to offer this high quality CPD designed to enhance teacher skills to enable them to develop our scientists of all abilities in the classroom at Secondary level, led by Kim Swift, Science Learning consultant.
This course is designed for teachers who are new or relatively new to Secondary Science teaching, returning after a break or would like a refresher course with support and training in the themes which underpin excellent teaching practice.

Differentiation and Challenge
Meeting the needs of all students in the classroom can involve a great deal of time consuming planning and organisation.
This session will give you real life, practical teaching strategies to support low attainers and explore extension and enrichment activities to stretch and challenge high attainers.

Revision and retention strategies
The move away from modular examinations and controlled assessment requires teachers to develop effective strategies that promote a holistic view of the subject.
This session will help you to move away from last minute revision strategies to supporting your students long term.
You will identify current strengths, and opportunities for change, both at long and short-term level. You will also consider the implications of current research into what helps students be more successful.

How STEM can enhance your Science provision in school
Find out how working with STEM Ambassadors and engaging in STEM workshops, competitions and clubs can bring to life the curriculum in real life.
It can be daunting to engage with outside agencies but it is very rewarding, this session will take you through how STEM can support you.

Engagement
Learn strategies, techniques and activities for exploiting curiosity, uncertainty, anticipation and surprise to emotionally engage your students – therefore develop more self-motivated learners and raising attainment.
The session will allow you to develop intriguing engagement techniques which you can easily adapt to your own teaching.

Outcomes

You will be able to:

  • deliver a range of challenging science activities particularly suited to meet the needs of low and high attainers
  • develop and extend your range of teaching and learning strategies
  • plan to implement learning to make an impact in your own school
  • identify ways of strengthening retention of subject knowledge, and examination technique
  • understand how STEM can enhance your provision in school
  • learn techniques and activities to encourage curiosity and engagement in your students
