Summary

The introduction and first delivery of the latest style of Science GCSEs has necessitated a review of our offer at KS3.  Even in departments where KS3 was redeveloped following the introduction of the new curriculum in 2014, further planning has been essential due to the focus in GCSEs on practical skills, maths skills, application and an increased level of demand; challenges that we couldn’t foresee before the new  GCSE assessments were in place.  The move to linear assessment has also led us to consider in greater depth how we support retention through both KS3 and KS4.  Add to this our desire to retain the engagement and excitement  of our learners and we have plenty to consider.

During this session, we will share examples of curriculum models that science departments are developing and testing to support progression and engagement through KS3 and KS4.  Participants will consider the essential components of a KS3 curriculum that effectively prepares students for KS4.  Participants will have the opportunity to share good practice with colleagues, whether a simple idea or a whole plan, tried and tested. There will be time during the session for participants to reflect on discussions, network with colleagues and to develop or tweak their own curriculum plans.
