Using technology to enhance practical work in science NE600 / B18

Duration
5 Weeks
Learning Method
Online Delivered CPD

Summary

There are lots of examples of how technology can enhance practical work and support student learning of science. Unfortunately technicians and teachers are often put off using technology in this way, due to a lack of training, initial costs and fear of technology not working.

Through this online course you will learn the skills and knowledge to “use digital technologies to support and enhance practical experience, but not replace it.” (Gatsby Practical Benchmark 7).

The course is designed to develop technicians’ capabilities in managing and supporting the use of technology in practical lessons. You will learn how to maintain and set up data loggers, mobile devices and apps and the use of technology to magnify and record. By the end of the course you will be able to deliver support to teachers and students in using cost effective technology in practical lessons.

Over the course of four weeks, you will be supported in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the technology available in your own school or college and collaborate with other technicians to evaluate practical applications.

You will be able to study at your own pace, and won't need to be online at any set time.

Outcomes

You will be able to:

  • develop your confidence in supporting the use of technology in practical work in science
  • explore how data loggers, mobile apps and mobile devices can support practical work in schools and colleges
  • identify and solve issues in the use of equipment and technology
  • describe and suggest to teachers and students ways of using technology in the classroom
  • evaluate equipment and technology available in your school or college for maximising student learning in practical work
