Summary

Led by Steve Hacker of the Science Learning Partnership, this two-part course is aimed at Secondary science teachers and has been designed to allow participants to reflect on their existing practice and develop alternative approaches to science teaching. The focus of the training is on applying different pedagogies to tried and tested science lessons so that teachers can enliven their current practice.

Over the two sessions, the course will cover:

  • Similarities and differences between KS3, KS4 and A Level teaching approaches.
  • Active learning - what, how and why?
  • Active approaches - what approaches do you use? What does research tell us about the effectiveness of active approaches?
  • Modelling active approaches; giving your lessons a ‘reboot’.
  • Active approaches - your turn - circus of experiments/activities in groups.
     

 

Outcomes

Participants will:

  • understand more about the researched benefits of active learning approaches
  • draw on a wider range of techniques, strategies and pedagogies to improve their students’ knowledge and understanding of core concepts
  • facilitate both collaborative and independent learning in their lessons
  • take away practical strategies to enable them to create more engaging lessons
