Developing the role of practical work in 11-16 secondary science RD338 / A01

Summary

Many teachers are keen to give practical activities a high profile and see it as an essential part of a high quality science education. However it is constrained by time and budgets and strongly influenced by detailed procedures in GCSE specifications. Getting the experiments to work may not be easy and the link between getting this to happen and being able to answer the related exam questions feels far from secure.

This new course led by Ed Walsh will explore the place of practical work, look at how an effective curriculum will develop skills progressively through Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 and consider how getting this right can lead to success in exams.

Outcomes

  • understand the characteristics of effective practical work and how they can be built into planning
  • consider the profile of skills expected and examined at GCSE and explore how these can be used to plan for effective provision over a five year course
  • analyse assessment items and explore how to prepare students effectively for these
