Bioinformatics and genomics NS507 / A17
Summary
The study of bioinformatics forms part of the Higher Biology and Higher Human Biology curricula. Gain support from the HE sector and Research Institutes as they seek to provide their students with examples of suitable case studies in both bioinformatics and genomics. This CPD is being delivered, with the support of SSERC, through a partnership of two of Edinburgh University’s leading research groups viz Edinburgh Bioinformatics and Edinburgh Genomics.
Edinburgh Bioinformatics is a collaborative group of bioinformaticians from several Schools and Colleges across the University of Edinburgh. They work together to share expertise and ideas both within their own groups and more widely with biologists across the University. Through the proposed programme delegates will be able to explore online and command line approaches to database interrogation.
The cutting edge research of Edinburgh Genomics includes de novo genome sequencing, comparative genomics, functional genomics, population genomics, and metagenomics, across the medical, agricultural and environmental sciences. Through working with members of the group, delegates will be able to consider a range of scenarios which will be useful in their own teaching.
To apply for this course please contact SSERC directly (sts@sserc.org.uk) who will forward you the necessary information. Shortly after the published closing date for applications the Administration Team at SSERC will send to successful applicants:
- confirmation of an offer of a place on the course together with details on enrolment procedures
- information on ENTHUSE bursaries and how to apply for such a bursary
- a set of terms and conditions which you must meet in order to qualify for an ENTHUSE bursary
If you are a supply teacher you may still qualify for an ENTHUSE bursary – please contact SSERC to establish your eligibility.
Outcomes
You will be able to:
- gain hands-on experience of interrogating databases through online and command line approaches
- explore cutting edge applications of bioinformatics to genomics, personalised medicine and phylogenetics
- describe cutting edge technologies and their applications within the curriculum
- receive a range of resources to support learning and teaching
