Green Labs and you, an introduction HC015 / C01
Summary
Laboratories are extremely energy intensive, and can use up to 10 times more energy than other academic and residential spaces. Laboratories also produce immense quantities of waste, and can become complex to operate. With research necessary for continuing science and engineering advancements, creating an efficient and sustainable laboratory is becoming increasingly important.
Achieving a ‘green lab’ requires a good understanding of health and safety, facility management, staff engagement, and even research subject selection. This workshop introduces laboratory sustainability, or green labs, and highlights the challenges in developing this approach in your institution. You should be able to leave the workshop with the initial tools and an improved understanding on how to achieve a sustainable lab.
You will develop:
- an understanding of what else is occurring in the field, and how to learn more
- the initial tools necessary for technicians to start achieving ‘green labs’
- methods to communicate successes, and ensure positive recognition
Outcomes
On completing this workshop, delegates will be able to:
- Start engaging your co-workers and environments on the importance of sustainable practices.
- Know more about equipment efficiency and how people interact with that equipment.
- Know where to learn more about laboratory sustainability (such as case studies and relevant legislation).
- Feel more confident about the importance of efficiency in science, and your role in achieving this.
- Engage senior management with your successes.
