Becoming more confident in teaching chemistry in KS3 & KS4 RE224 / H03
Summary
This course is for non-specialists who want to become more confident in teaching chemistry at KS3 and KS4. It will provide a range of simple, safe and effective practical work as well as addressing the key concepts that form the basis of chemistry.
Non-specialists often find chemistry a collection of unrelated facts to learn. Students find the abstract concepts difficult and misconceptions frequently arise. The course will attempt to address both issues.
‘Taking it Further’ resources will be available for delegates wanting to develop their understanding beyond GCSE chemistry. Indeed, the more chemistry you know, the more it makes sense.
Outcomes
You will
- develop a wider understanding of the behaviour of sub-microscopic particles
- appreciate that energy considerations are as important in chemistry as the chemicals themselves.
- make more sense of chemistry by using all the patterns and principles available
- consider the value of practical demonstrations and how to make them successful
- consider different – more effective – ways of teaching basic chemistry and take away resources to help with the next day’s lessons!
